Tools for empowering through language (TETL)
| The reason that immigrants and refugees have a much lower employment rate than EU citizens is due to a large extent that they have problems with literacy skills and communication. Many EU countries are spending billions of Euros on education and training of immigrants to get them into the labour market. But the employment rate for immigrants has not increased significantly over the past 5 years, indicating that we do not get the necessary results in relation to the many resources that are being used. There is a growing need in EU for developing new ways of teaching and training of immigrants to improve there literacy skills and communication in the host-country language. It is extremely important for the immigrants to value their previous qualification obtained in their home country and to improve their employability at the labour market. We believe that using authentic texts, illustrations and communication will provide a faster and better integration process, combining in a new way formal and non-formal learning. By improving literacy skills and communication immigrants become more self-sufficient and can participate as productive workers, family members and citizens. We also believe that it is important to increase the teachers and trainers competences regarding foreign cultures, school systems, religion and so on from immigrants countries and to raise self- consciousness regarding own culture, hidden rules and history. The teachers and principals met for the first time in Birkeness in Norway in September 2011.
