Strengthening of Kenya Local Government Workers Union

The project aims at strengthening the Kenya Local Government Workers Union (KLGWU) in the restructuring of their union, in order to en ensure that the members' interests (wages, working and employment conditions, etc.) are secured and strengthened.

Kenya's local government structure was reorganized as a result of the new constitution of 2010. This takes effect from the coming election at the end of 2012. KLGWU's structure with 175 units/branches are tied up to the current structure of 175 counties. The new constitution reduces the counties from 175 to 47. Thus the structure of KLGWU must be adapted to the new local government structure.

The project will ensure KLGWU a good basis for deciding on the new structure and how it should be implemented. In this connection the development of new statutes is also included in the activities. Moreover, training in negotiation for both central and local leaders in KLGWU will be conducted in order to equip them as good as possible in the forthcoming restructuring phase.
