Decreased child labour in the mines of Mererani, Tanzania
| Thousands of children and young people are employed in Tanzania’s mines under conditions that only a few can imagine. It is the consequence of poverty and lack of alternatives. FIC and AIF Aarhus has therefore joined forces with the local organizations Mererani Good Hope, Tamico and Awlahuric in a project which purpose is to provide decent living and working conditions for children and young people and their families in the mining sector in Tanzania. Through education, information and campaigns children and young people in the mining sector will be aware of their rights according to international agreements and national legislation and the importance of taking an education and take care of their health. The objective is to eliminate child work in the mining sector and send a minimum of 250 children to school. Children and youth will participate in capacity building, which will enable them to establish local youth organizations. A total of 100 mothers will be trained in entrepreneurship so that they can improve their abilities to generate an income and feed their families.
